Coronation Bridge History and Facts

Coronation Bridge was completed in the year of 1941. The foundation stone of the bridge was laid by John Anderson in 1937 who was then the governor of Bengal. The bridge was named “Coronation” in order to honour The Coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.

The bridge was built by using the technique named The Reinforced Concrete System due to Teesta’s depth and the strong current of water. John Chamber, a British Engineer was the one who designed, drawn and planned the construction of the Bridge. And the contractor of the project was Mumbai based Messrs J.C. Gammon.

Moreover, the name “Bag Pool” was given to this bridge by the locals as there are two statues of tigers in the entrance. And, this Sevoke bridge signifies the craftsmanship of Roman architecture.

How to Reach Coronation Bridge

Reaching Coronation or the Sevoke Bridge is quite easy and convenient from Siliguri as the distance between them is 25.1 km. There are plenty of buses or taxis available from Siliguri’s P.C. Mittal Bus Stand or any other stands.

The nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri Junction (NJP) at a distance of 29 km and Bagdogra is the nearest airport at a distance of 33 km from the Coronation Bridge. After reaching these stations, get a car or taxi to finally reach the breathtaking Sevoke Bridge.
